The western edition bets everything on its character illustrations: large-format portraits with fine lines and washed-out colours, displayed at every line of dialogue and drawn in several expressions. The contrast is striking between that care for faces and deliberately static backdrops, presented as paintings examined with a cursor rather than crossed.
The score favours simulated acoustic timbres: harp, strings and flutes carry slow themes accompanying the meticulous examination of the scenery, while battles bring in percussion and brass without ever forcing the volume. That general restraint suits a game where most of the time is spent observing and reading.
The story puts its hero in an untenable position: sent to carry out an order from above, he gradually discovers that the land he must purge shelters beings whose only fault is existing. The writing does not decide for him and leaves him carrying the doubt to the end, giving every decision a weight the game system heightens further.

2005 Atlus tactical RPG, the American version of a Sting title from the Dept. Heaven collection, praised for its art direction and an original interaction-based exploration system. Released in a limited run by Atlus USA, a publisher whose games systematically become rare and valued, it grew scarce quickly after release. Desirability combines the Atlus imprint, the cult aura of the Dept. Heaven series and a real print scarcity, prized by collectors of GBA RPGs.
An underrated gem
An RPG with no free exploration, Riviera stakes everything on illustrated-novel staging and a combat system built on wearing down your items. This radical approach, disorienting at first, slowed its reach. For anyone who accepts its peculiar rules, it's a dense, endearing adventure and an overlooked jewel from studio Sting.
Is Riviera - The Promised Land still worth playing in 2026?
A singular tactical RPG from Sting, Riviera The Promised Land swaps free exploration for fixed scenes you search, and poetic battles where each weapon wears down and is mastered through use. This unusual structure, centered on characters, bonds and multiple endings, keeps real identity against more classic RPGs. The measured pace and the lack of free movement disorient at first. A fascinating niche gem for fans of singular Japanese RPGs and careful writing.
