Sega's arcade hit in a convincing MS version. The pseudo-3D runs decently, the frenzy is there. Not perfect but an impressive technical showcase for the console of its era.

Collector interest

A Japanese and American pressing of Space Harrier, the first distribution wave of Sega's cult shooter on the console, distinct from the European edition by its zone. Its desirability rests on that earlier Japan-US profile and the game's place in Sega's technical history, a super-scaler showcase. Collectors seek this variant for its bi-regional marking and the precedence of its distribution on these two key markets.

Better with friends

An iconic rail shooter where you weave between obstacles and creatures across checkered scenery at top speed. Without a true two-player mode, it shines as a relay among friends: you pass the pad to beat each other's score and hold out against unleashed bosses. Hypnotic and snappy, it turns an evening into a shared scoring challenge where everyone watches for the feat that'll silence the others.

Is Space Harrier still worth playing in 2026?

An adaptation of Sega's emblematic cabinet, Space Harrier propels a flying hero through surreal pseudo 3D settings, dodging and firing at an avalanche of enemies and oversized bosses. The sense of speed, the forward scrolling and the psychedelic imaginary made this title an arcade milestone. The 8 bit conversion inevitably trims the spectacle, but brilliantly restores the pace and the spirit, a feat for the machine. For a retro rail shooter fan, someone curious about a founding classic or a collector, the title keeps an intact energy and character.
