Collector interest

The American edition of Square's cult shoot 'em up, one of the publisher's rare Western releases in the genre, making it a landmark for shmup fans outside Japan. More common than the Japanese version, it stays prized for this exceptional standing in a catalog dominated by RPGs. Its interest lies in this editorial singularity rather than in great scarcity.

An underrated gem

Square's one and only foray into the horizontal shooter, it equips your fighter with a manipulator arm able to grab enemy weapons, all wrapped in a slick industrial look and a memorable electro soundtrack. Released in small numbers, it stays unknown outside the enthusiasts' circle. Stylish and snappy, it's a showcase of craft worth rediscovering.

Is Einhaender still worth playing in 2026?

Einhänder is a Square horizontal shooter of striking visual beauty for the PS1. The Gunpod system that lets you recover and use enemy weapons is brilliant, giving piloting a unique strategic dimension. Kenichirou Fukui's exceptional electronic soundtrack, sumptuous mechanical art and well-dosed difficulty make this one of the prettiest horizontal shmups ever made. An absolute classic today.
