JRPG by Hironobu Sakaguchi, Final Fantasy creator, Wii-exclusive. Zael and companions explore Lazulis Island, last refuges of a dying world. Hybrid real-time/tactical combat with cover and squad coordination, mature narration centered on friendship and sacrifice. Wii pushed to its limits visually, memorable design. An essential JRPG gem for the console, underrated at Western release.

Built upon its rock, the city of Lazulis imposes a twilight fantasy of weathered tones, between stone, metal and golden light. The cinematic staging treats every shot like a film frame. This visual ambition, broad and inhabited, gives the story a real dramatic density.

Memorable bosses

Conceived by the fathers of Final Fantasy, this action-RPG blends cover, magic and a taunt command to orchestrate group battles against colossal creatures. Drawing a guardian's attention while an ally strikes its weak point turns each major fight into a small tactical choreography. Carried by Nobuo Uematsu's music, the whole distills a controlled intensity.

Is Last Story, The still worth playing in 2026?

An action RPG from Hironobu Sakaguchi and Mistwalker, The Last Story reinvents the genre with a real time combat system blending cover, targeting and group skills, in an island city of melancholy charm. The cinematic staging, Nobuo Uematsu's score and the narrative ambition make it a singular work, one of the Wii's late RPG high points. A few technical blemishes and a perfectible camera remain. A great game to recommend for fans of Japanese RPGs and lovers of carefully crafted stories.
