Collector interest

The Japanese version of Maximo, a demanding Capcom action-platformer in the Ghosts'n Goblins lineage, a bit less widespread than the Western editions. This native edition appeals to collectors of cross-region releases of a cult-series heir in Japan. Its interest lies in this local run and original packaging rather than marked scarcity, in a niche of tough-action fans.

Memorable bosses

A direct heir to Ghosts'n Goblins, this action game tests you with demonic guardians lurking at the end of trap-strewn levels. Stripped to his underwear at the slightest mistake, the knight must read every attack and strike without wasting his precious lives. Unapologetically demanding, its battles carry on the punishing, gleeful tradition of its illustrious model.

An underrated gem

A three-dimensional heir to Ghosts'n Goblins, this action-platformer reconnects with fearsome difficulty and a hero who fights in his underwear. Its harshness and stingy lives system put more than a few people off. But its polished production and old-school challenge will satisfy lovers of demanding platforming who don't flinch at failure.

Is Maximo still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2002 on PS2, Capcom's project sets itself up as the three dimensional heir of Ghosts 'n Goblins, taking on its formidable challenge and its macabre humour. The knight Maximo, stripped to his underwear when he loses his armour, faces hordes of the undead in cunning levels where the slightest mistake costs dearly. The gothic and buffoonish art direction, the vicious level design and the precise handling make a demanding and rewarding action platformer. The limited lives system will frustrate modern players. Recommended for fans of old school difficulty and for Capcom nostalgics who miss the unforgiving design of the arcade era.
