An early forerunner of cover-based tactical shooters from Koei. WinBack lays the foundations of a genre that would explode after it, with wall cover, precise aiming and military missions. A touch stiff today, but historically very important and worth a respectful rediscovery.

Collector interest

Koei European November 1999 pressing, which marks the port on N64 of the cover-based shooter pioneered by Koei. The cover-system innovation would become the next decade's standard with Kill.Switch and Gears of War, which gives the cartridge a pivotal historical status. The PAL version includes a multilingual manual detailing cover techniques, a useful document for documenting the origin of the mechanic. Modest European run.

An underrated gem

Long before taking cover became an action-game reflex, this Koei title was already laying the groundwork with its system of ducking behind walls. Stiff and repetitive, it left no mark on critics. Yet its role as an unsung forerunner of the genre gives it real historical value for the tactical-shooter curious.

Is Operation WinBack still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 1999 on Nintendo 64, Koei's project is a forerunner of the third person action game built on the cover system, where the hero presses against walls before popping out to aim and fire. This mechanic, which would later inspire major names of the genre, installs tactical gunfights unprecedented for the time. The muscular espionage staging and a competitive multiplayer mode round out the offering. The uneven pace, a limited artificial intelligence and an austere production betray the age. An interesting piece of history, recommended for those curious about the origins of cover shooting and for fans of retro action.
