Perfect Dark pushes everything GoldenEye laid down even further. Elite AI, cinematic staging, dense missions and a multiplayer of dizzying variety thanks to its sim opponents. The engine groans, but the ambition and gameplay precision still stand as an absolute masterclass today.

Rare and Nintendo Japan Japanese pressing from May 2000, distributed a week before the North American release. The Japanese cartridge takes the US Rev 0 code prior to correction and therefore preserves the Mr. Blonde option, a notable fact. The Japanese box includes a bilingual character booklet translated for the local market, and the run was shorter than the Western pressings due to a tight Japanese market for Western FPS. A coveted piece for Japanese Rare collectors.

Is Perfect Dark still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2000 on Nintendo 64, Rare's project is the spiritual heir of GoldenEye, a first person shooter of staggering technical ambition for the console. Agent Joanna Dark crosses a futuristic espionage campaign with objectives that vary by difficulty, backed by an arsenal of wild inventiveness and clever gadgets. The multiplayer mode, rich in options and bots, was a benchmark of split screen gaming. The flattering resolution at the cost of an unstable framerate and dated controls betray the age. A peak of console shooting of its time, recommended for fans of infiltration and of multiplayer fun.
