Sonic Team tries a trio mechanic of three Sonics with speed, fly and power roles. Good idea on paper, slightly stiff execution and a difficult camera. Speed is there but clearly not the mascot's peak. For tolerant fans.

Impossible to resist Crush 40's anthem "Sonic Heroes" and the pop-rock themes tailored for each team. Catchy refrains and bouncing tempos match the three-character run with infectious joy. This melodic exuberance, sunny and unifying, remains one of the most rousing in the series.

Collector interest

The Japanese version of Sonic Heroes on GameCube, the first 3D entry conceived from the outset for multiplatform release after Sega's exit from the console market. Though the game was widely distributed, this Japanese pressing draws collectors with its more restricted local distribution and regional case. Its desirability rests on that status as the first major multiplatform Sonic adventure and attachment to the three-character team formula.

Is Sonic Heroes still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2003, this Sega entry bets on teams of three characters swapped on the fly, each specialised in speed, power or flight. The four team structure extends the length and changes the feel from one run to the next. The pace stays fast and colourful, faithful to the hedgehog's spirit. The jittery camera, the level repetition across teams and a sometimes unfair difficulty weigh, yet fans of fast platforming and of Sonic find an energetic ride that still works in short sessions.
