Description
Puzzle game developed by Capcom and published in Europe in October 2003. Street Fighter characters - Ryu, Chun-Li, Zangief, Guile and Bison - face off in puzzle duels where players drop colored gems to form groups that destroy them. Transposing the fighters into miniature versions is the whole visual appeal: crushed proportions, enormous heads, victory and dismay poses replayed in a few frames at the sides of the board. The gems, meanwhile, stay strictly legible, four frank colours and marked outlines, an indispensable condition for the speed demanded.
The fighters' themes are rearranged in a deliberately cute register: raised tempos, music-box timbres, refrains shortened to loop over the length of a duel. Recognising the original martial melody under that sugary layer is a pleasure in itself, and the gap between the two registers makes the programme's whole charm.

Marrying falling-block puzzling with the Street Fighter world makes an explosive cocktail: assembling same-coloured gems then shattering the lot at once dumps an avalanche of blocks on your opponent. Versus quickly turns into a clever, hilarious tug-of-war. Cute on the surface, fiercely strategic underneath, a competitive puzzle as accessible as it is addictive.

Stacking gems of the same color, shattering them with a flash stone and then burying the opponent under a deluge of blocks concentrates all the tension in a snappy duel. Patiently building your combo to trigger it at the right moment endlessly revives the rematch. The handling takes some getting used to, but this chaining mechanic stays a peak of competitive puzzling.
