Collector interest

A DreamFactory and Square fighting game with an advanced grappling and free-movement system, a sequel kept exclusive to Japan with a fleshed-out quest mode. Its local distribution makes it a markedly sought piece among fans of never-localized niche fighters. Its concrete scarcity, especially in its most limited variant, supports a value above the more common fighting games.

An underrated gem

A 3D fighting game of rare depth, crafted by former Virtua Fighter staff, it adds a quest mode in dungeon-RPG style where you capture creatures. Released exclusively in Japan, it slipped under Western radars. Its technical depth and generous solo content make it one of the console's finest unsung fighters.

Better with friends

A 3D fighter with free movement where grappling and close-range counters offer a tactical approach distinct from the genre. The competition rewards positioning and reading grabs, each round able to swing on a well-felt throw. Distinctive and deep, it offers duelists singular clashes and feeds rivalries where you explore uncommon mechanics.

Is Tobal 2 still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 1997 on PS1 in Japan, DreamFactory's project offers the Japan exclusive sequel to Tobal, with a strongly widened cast and an enriched Quest mode that resembles a true action role playing game. The 3D combat handling keeps its suppleness, the combo chains gain expressivity and the electronic music still holds. The 3D modelling ages with its charm. Recommended today for 3D versus devotees, for Square fans curious about a bold signature never localised in the West and for PS1 collectors fond of a cult console sequel on Sony's first home console hardware globally.
