Mega Man 5 with its eight varied Robot Masters and polished soundtrack. The series shows some signs of fatigue but remains high-quality. An excellent platformer despite the familiar formula.

Story
"Anecdotal"
Carried by Proto Man's mysterious arrival, the entry deploys catchy electronic themes and a slightly graver atmosphere. Capcom's music supports the action with a melodic energy faithful to the series' spirit. This sonic generosity confirms the studio's unequalled craft on NES.

Collector interest

The US NTSC NES edition of the fifth entry, released at the end of the NES commercial cycle in the States. The late US print is shorter than the earlier entries, making clean complete copies notably less common, with the US cardboard box warping on top. Desirability comes from this end-of-generation scarcity and the game's place in the Capcom saga, among the structuring pieces of a serious US NES collection.

Memorable bosses

Muddying the waters with a Proto Man suspected of betrayal, this fifth installment sends out masters with pronounced gimmicks, from Gravity Man's inverted gravity to Star Man's orbits. Gathering the letters to summon the bird Beat rewards exploring the stages. Without reinventing the formula, these guardians polish their arena ideas and keep the joy of combat intact.

Is Mega Man 5 still worth playing in 2026?

Mega Man 5 offers eight varied Robot Masters and a polished soundtrack. The series shows some creative fatigue, with designs growing more similar and a slightly softened challenge, but stays at a high level with impeccable polish. The Super Arrow, Charge Kick and the introduction of Beat are welcome additions. Still an excellent retro platformer to chain after the previous entries today.
