Story
★★★★★
"Solid"
Snappy sprites, a futuristic hero and colourful settings of frenzied action: the X series unfurls a lively, dynamic science-fiction aesthetic. The fluidity of the movements and the perfect readability overflow with energy. This visual direction, sleek and polished, illustrates all of Capcom's know-how in 2D.
Bringing together the Mega Man X adventures, the compilation gathers rock and metal themes of electric energy, the series' sonic signature. Supercharged riffs and heroic melodies match the nervy action of the fights. This musical generosity, cut for speed, brings back all the panache of the Maverick Hunter.
Gameplay
"Excellent"
Fun
"From the very first seconds"
Choosing between X and Zero radically changes your approach: precise ranged fire on one side, close-up laser sabre on the other. The platform action, fluid and spectacular, is heightened by animated cutscenes and memorable bosses. Stealing the Mavericks' powers stays a delight. Fast, stylish and generous, arguably one of the X series' peaks.
Addictiveness
"Obsessive"
Dashing, wall-jumping and snatching the weapon of a defeated boss to use against the next sets up an action flow where each stage upgrades the character. Choosing between two heroes and hunting down the hidden upgrades makes you start it all over. The level design stays linear, but the snappy precision and gratifying mastery keep an immediate hook.
Complete: box, manual and disc/cart very clean. Lightly handled.

Original Japanese Saturn edition of Rockman X4, distributed by Capcom in August 1997 with the 1M tag, the Japanese version of Mega Man X4 whose Rockman title sets it apart from the North American Mega Man X4 and from the absence of a PAL run. Capcom rigid case with intact obi and Haruki Suetsugu illustration in its native printing. Capcom Japan run was short, complete with obi clearly valued among Rockman X completists isolating the original Japanese edition from the US run.
Memorable bosses
A high point of the X series, this entry lets you choose between X's shots and Zero's saber, two styles that transform every duel. Charismatic Mavericks, animated cutscenes and blade combat, like the memorable Magma Dragoon, lift the staging. The weakness system remains, but the dual approach and dramatic intensity make it a lasting fan favorite.
Is Rockman X4 still worth playing in 2026?
A direct sequel to the Mega Man X saga by Capcom, Mega Man X4 offers an action platform adventure with a choice between X and Zero, two characters with radically distinct gameplays. The vibrant anime art direction, sublime cutscene animation and precise handling make it an absolute saga reference on Saturn. For anyone fond of Mega Man X or seeking an absolute Capcom classic, an absolutely essential recommendation today still without the slightest hesitation on the machine truly here indeed.
