The Kamurocho district recreated with a teeming realism, garish neon and living alleys: the Japanese night takes on an almost tangible presence. The density of detail and the urban light compose a theatre of concrete and signs. This visual direction, dense and immersive, makes the city a character in its own right.
Eclectic and flamboyant, the music blends nervy rock, funk, disco and karaoke numbers to make the nights of Kamurocho pulse. Each street fight and each singing session overflow with an infectious energy. This sonic generosity, stylish and unexpected, is the whole flavour and soul of the series.
In the glittering Japan of the late 1980s, two young yakuza struggle in a real-estate war that is bigger than them. A flamboyant prequel, the tale paints ambition, loyalty and the birth of two legends with melodramatic intensity. Regarded as a peak of the series, it moves as much as it thrills.

Roaming the streets of Kamurocho between street brawls, a dramatic plot and a myriad of zany side activities sets up a world so dense that one detour always calls for another. Following the story and trawling the mini-games reward curiosity. Its combat repeats a little, but the attachment to its district and the profusion of activities hold you for the long haul.

An eighties prequel, this chapter drops Kiryu and Majima into semi-open Tokyo and Osaka where you happily lose yourself among substories, minigames and business management. Brutal street combat carries an intense main thread, but it's the density of side content that truly swells the clock. That blend of mob drama and unbridled pastimes made it one of the most beloved Yakuza games.

Ryuu ga Gotoku 0 Chikai no Basho, the Japanese version of Yakuza 0, a much-celebrated prequel retracing the youths of Kiryu and Majima in bubble-era Japan, released first in Japan ahead of its worldwide spread. This original edition appeals to those wanting the entry in its native language, closest to the studio's intent. Its desirability rests on the entry's aura and this reference Japanese run rather than scarcity.
Is Ryuu ga Gotoku 0 - Chikai no Basho still worth playing in 2026?
Ryu ga Gotoku 0, known in the West as Yakuza 0, is a legendary prequel to the saga, and one of the PS3's greatest games. Diving into the gaudy Japan of 1988, alternating between a young Kiryu in Kamurocho and a still-tormented Majima in Sotenbori, unfolds an epic narrative of rare power, blending mob drama and burlesque madness. The two protagonists, beautifully written, carry an adventure of dizzying richness, overflowing with unforgettable side activities. The brisk combat gameplay and the maniacal care for detail elevate the whole. An absolute masterpiece, to be discovered without the slightest reservation.
