Tail of the Sun is an Imagineer PS1 open-world survival game set in prehistoric times. Hunting, gathering and survival in a 3D prehistoric world. Original and ambitious concept but technically limited and imperfect for PS1. A curious title whose ambition exceeds the console's technical capabilities.

An underrated gem

A thoroughly bewildering prehistoric sandbox: you lead a tribe of cavemen to hunt, eat and sleep so they can grow, with no real goal or guidance. Cryptic and repetitive, it left plenty of players baffled. Its unapologetic strangeness and absolute freedom make it a fascinating oddity for fans of games that reject every convention.

Is Tail of the Sun still worth playing in 2026?

A deeply atypical Japanese production from Artdink, Tail of the Sun puts the player at the head of a prehistoric tribe whose sole goal is to build a tower of bones reaching the sun, in an open world where you hunt, eat and grow your cavemen. The lack of clear objectives, the free pace and the raw aesthetic make for a disorienting, singular contemplative experience. The crude technology and the obscure concept put off. A fascinating curiosity for fans of experimental games and unconventional design.
