The original Super Famicom version of SimCity, the 1991 Maxis port overseen by Nintendo, which introduced Dr. Wright (the Bowser/Mario advisor) absent from the PC. As the Japanese market's source pressing, the most widespread, it is identifiable by its SFC cardboard box and spine card. The appeal lies in its pivotal simulation status within the SFC catalogue and in being the version that birthed Nintendo's bespoke additions, far more than any scarcity.

Is SimCity still worth playing in 2026?

SimCity on the SNES is probably the best console port of the Maxis original, namely a city builder in which growing a metropolis demands juggling zoning, taxes and infrastructure. Nintendo customized the title with Mario advisors and a destructive Bowser, making the experience both family friendly and surprisingly deep. The pace is measured and the learning curve rewarding. Recommended to fans of calm management and to those curious about a PC classic ported with a genuine Nintendo identity.
